Spiral Binding or Coil binding is a very popular book binding style for creating reports, documents, proposals and presentations. Spiral binding is known by a number of names including spiral coil, color coil, colorcoil, ez-coil, plastic coil, coilbind and plastikoil. Documents bound with spiral binding / coil binding have the ability to open flat on a desk and offer 360 degree rotation for note taking- a applicable binding for manuals and notebooks. Spiral Binding is durable and is an excellent choice for documents. Spiral binding / coil binding elements are readily available in many colors and sizes.

Spiral Binding / Coil Binding Hole Patterns:

The common hole / punch pattern is 4:1 pitch (4 holes per 1") spiral binding; or sometimes referred to as 6mm. 4:1 means there are four holes per inch on the binding edge of the document. The holes / punch pattern for this style are usually either round or oval shaped. Elements for binding documents with 4:1 pitch spiral coil are available in sizes ranging from 6mm up to 50mm in diameter.  Allowing binding documents that are up to two inches.

Not as common as 4:1 pitch spiral / coil, some prefer to use 5:1 pitch (5 holes per 1") spiral binding / coil or referred to 5mm they interchange. With five holes per inch, 5:1 pitch spiral / coil is tightly bound and provides a cleaner appearance. The limiting factor with 5:1 or 5mm pitch is that it only binds up to 25mm- not a good choice for larger documents as they are more difficult to bind function as a document.

3:1 pitch (3 holes per 1") spiral binding / coil is less common. Designed for use with the hole pattern used in Wire Binding (twin loop, double loop) or with GBC Proclick. 3:1 pitch spiral coil is easier to use for large diameter books because there are less holes / punch patterns to run the spiral / coil through. Spiral binding elements for this hole pattern are available in sizes ranging from 6mm up to 50mm.

2.5:1 pitch coil is also known a 0.400 pitch spiral / coil and requires a hole / punch pattern that has 2.5 holes every inch along the binding edge. Most users choose this hole / punch pattern that is produced for 2:1 pitch Wire Binding. 2.5:1 spiral coil uses a larger gauge plastic filament diameter and is designed for binding larger documents. Spiral / coil in this pitch pattern are offered in diameters; 20mm thru 56mm.

Spiral Binding / Coil Binding Lengths:  An added benefit of spiral coil binding is that the supplies are available many lengths to match your binding edge. The standard 12" length is the most popular spiral binding for 11" documents. This spiral / coil is put into an eleven inch document and the excess length of coil is cut and crimped at each end of the book. Binderies and print shops often times choose spiral binding /coil in 36" lengths for the flexibility to bind various document sizes.

Spiral Binding / Coil Binding Colors:  Spiral / coil binding supplies are available in a variety of colors. Spiral / coil binding is a great choice that allows the customer to highlight / accent a document with a desired color.

Spiral Binding / Coil Binding Diameters:  Spiral binding / Coil binding elements are typically measured in millimeters (mm) with inches being a close estimate to the actual mm size (6mm is very close to 1/4" but not exactly). Spiral binding is available in sizes from 6mm [1/4"] thru 56mm depending on the pitch (hole spacing of the document) of spiral that you choose.

Spiral Binding / Coil Binding Equipment:  It requires three pieces of equipment for binding documents with spiral binding / coil binding. A paper punch is needed to punch the holes along the binding edge of the document. A spiral / coil inserter is required to spin the spiral / coil through the holes- although above 35mm it is done manually. To complete the process spiral / coil crimping pliers or a crimping machine  is needed to cut and crimp the spiral / coil ends.  This completes the document by trimming the ends and securing the spiral element in the document.

General Wire Binding Information:

Wire Binding is one of the most popular commercial book binding methods used in North America and is known by a number of different names including twin loop wire, wire-o, double loop wire, double-o, ring wire and wirebind. With this binding method, users insert their punched pages onto a U shaped element and then use a wire closer to squeeze the spine until it is round. Documents that are bound with wire binding will open completely flat on a desk and allow for 360 degree rotation of bound pages.

Pitches / Hole Patterns:  There are three common hole patterns used in Wire binding documents with double loop wire. Each hole pattern has specific sizes and applications where it is best suited. Here is a quick overview of the different options...

Wire 3:1 Pitch (3 Holes Per 1"): The three to one pitch hole pattern is most commonly used for wire binding small sized documents with double loop wire. Spines for wire binding are available in sizes between 3/16" and 9/16" in diameter. Three to one pitch wires are not available in sizes larger than 9/16". The size of the holes used with this wire binding pattern simply does not allow for larger spines to be produced. The hole pattern used for 3:1 pitch wire binding can use either square or round holes.

Wire 2:1 Pitch (2 Holes Per 1"): A two to one pitch / hole pattern is most commonly used for wire binding larger sized documents it can also be used for binding smaller diameter books. 2:1 pitch wire is most commonly found in sizes ranging from 5/8" up to 1-1/4". However, a couple of manufacturers make wire binding special small sized 2:1 pitch wire for binding documents as small as 1/4". The holes for this type of wire binding are normally rectangular but can sometimes be square or round depending on the manufacturer of the paper punching equipment that you use.

Wire Binding Process: Binding documents using the double loop wire binding involves just a few basic steps.

Put together the document including covers and measure the document overall thickness to determine the correct size of wire binding element.

Set up your wire binding machine so the holes are centered on your paper.

Divide your document into appropriate sections and punch it using your wire binding machine or modular multipurpose binding punch.

Place the pages of your document onto the U shaped wire binding elements by hanging them on it.

After carefully arranging the pages of the document over to the wire binding closer, engage the machine to squeeze the element together until the U shape becomes an O shape- usually with a lever action closer although there are pneumatic systems out there.

 Wire Binding (twin loop / double loop) Equipment Binding documents with double loop / twin loop wire requires a binding machine including a wire closer. Low volume operators will often find a small less expensive manual wire binding machine that offers a manual hole punch and a built in wire closer to be adequate. Medium volume users will often require a wire binding machine with an electric punch that can or cannot include a wire closer, wire closer can always be separate. High volume wire binding users such as print shops, larger binderies,  and in-house printers will split the punching and final stages of the binding process (punching, hanging pages on the wire and closing the wire) wire in order to increase productivity. These users will often use a higher end heavy duty modular interchangeable die punch or an automated punching system along with either a manual or an electric wire closing machine.

There are many applications that can enhance the appearance of documents while protecting it better. Among them are binding machines

. Binding machines, or binders, are machines used to align, punch, and enclose individual sheets of papers into document sets. With binding machines, you can make documents look more professional, keep them well protected and lengthen their usage life.

1. Document Protection

Now, all binding can enhance the appearance of documents and protect them from damages. Choosing a binding machine to use for your report or paper, however, is not as simple as just picking any binder you can find in the market. There are many types of binding machines and each type would differ in price, binding method, capacity and a lot of other things. The question now is what kind of binding machine would you want to purchase?

2. What Kind Of Document To Bind?

Different kinds of documents require different styles and not all kinds of binding machines can give your document the binding style it needs. Decide whether your document needs a traditional finish, a book-style finish, a contemporary finish or a finish with some metallic appearance. Then, base your choice on this decision.

3. How Thick?

Each type of binding machine has a limit on the thickness of the document it can bind. Some binding machines can bind documents of up to 3 inches in thickness while others are limited to binding I inch documents.

4. How Will The Machine Be Used?

If the binding machine would be used at home or in a home office, and not regularly at that, then a simple and affordable binding machine would generally be recommended. Larger offices that demands more binding jobs would need some complex and electrical binding machine unit.

5. Binding Machine Options

After you’ve answered all the questions and have eventually determined what kind of binding machine you need for your documents, then it is time for you to consider your options. There are a lot of binding machines available today and each of them has their own set of strengths and weaknesses.

6. Coil Spiral Binding Machines

Coil or spiral binding is probably the most recognizable type of binding technology. It is the type of binding that one usually sees in blank notebooks. Coil binding machines are available in table top and floor standing models. These machines are also available in manual or electric configurations. Spiral binding machines bind documents by (1) punching holes on the pages, (2) inserting the coil, and (3) crimping and cutting the coil ends.

- Can bind documents of up to approximately 1 inch in thickness
- Ideal for low volumes of binding and generally used by organizations like schools and churches

7. Plastic Comb Binding Machines

Plastic comb binding machines are among the most popular binding machines today. These binders use a plastic binding with many combs inserted into holes punched along the edge of the stack of papers.

- Has the capacity of binding documents of up to 2 inches in thickness
- Easy to use, easy to assemble, durable, economical and reusable

8. Wire Loop Binding Machines

Wire loop binds appear like a combination of coil bound and plastic comb bound documents. This is because wire loop machines use wires in double loop design. Once inserted into the document, this wire loop will then be closed by the machine or a separate closer.
